Hydrogen water vs alkaline water.

By the Thriviom editorial teamUpdated 5 min read2 sources

The short answer

Alkaline water is water with a higher pH. Hydrogen water is water with molecular hydrogen gas dissolved in it, and its pH is not the point. When researchers took apart the claims made for alkaline ionized water, they concluded the measured effects came from the hydrogen it happened to contain, not from its alkalinity1.

Key takeaways

  • Alkaline water is about pH; hydrogen water is about dissolved H₂.
  • Ionizer machines make both at once, which is how the two got confused1.
  • A negative ORP reading tracks dissolved hydrogen, but pH and minerals also move it1.
  • Mayo Clinic notes that most health claims for alkaline water lack strong evidence2.

Two different ideas

Alkaline water has a pH above 7. It is sold bottled, made with mineral additives, or produced by home ionizers that split water with electricity.

Hydrogen water has extra molecular hydrogen, H₂, dissolved in it. It can be close to neutral pH. What matters is how much hydrogen gas it holds, and whether that gas is still there when you drink it.

Why they get confused

An ionizer produces alkaline water at one electrode and hydrogen gas at the same time, so the water that comes out is both alkaline and hydrogen-rich. For years, the benefits people reported were credited to the alkalinity.

A 2022 review examined each proposed explanation in turn, from pH to “micro-clustered” water, and concluded that hydrogen was the exclusive agent behind both the negative ORP and the measured effects. It also noted that the idea of alkaline water neutralizing “acidic waste” in the body is not plausible1.

What ORP actually tells you

Oxidation-reduction potential, or ORP, is the number both kinds of water are marketed on. A strongly negative ORP in drinking water usually indicates dissolved hydrogen, which is why the 2022 review attributes ionized water’s negative ORP to its H₂1.

But ORP is not a hydrogen measurement. It shifts with pH and mineral content too, so two waters with the same ORP can carry very different amounts of hydrogen. If a brand is selling hydrogen, the figure to ask for is the hydrogen concentration.

Which should you drink?

If what interests you is the research on selective antioxidants, the relevant variable is hydrogen, so choose a product that states it and drink it fresh. If you simply prefer the taste of mineral-rich alkaline water, it is a reasonable way to drink more water, but Mayo Clinic advises that most of its health claims lack strong evidence2.

Common questions

Is hydrogen water alkaline?

Not necessarily. Hydrogen water is defined by the gas dissolved in it, not by its pH. Depending on how it is made it can be close to neutral or slightly alkaline.

Does alkaline water contain hydrogen?

Water from an ionizer does contain some hydrogen when it is fresh, because electrolysis produces it. Bottled alkaline water made with mineral additives generally does not.

Can I drink both?

Yes. They are both water. If you use hydrogen tablets, dissolve them in the water you would drink anyway and drink it soon after.
